Allergies Articles, Tips and Information

This probably isn't the first time you've heard of them. Allergies are so common 20% of Americans have some kind of allergic reaction or another to certain external stimuli whether food, water, or air. But what are allergies? And why do we get them?

In 1906, Viennese pediatrician, Clemens von Pirquet, first coined the term "allergies" after he observed that certain symptoms of his patients might have been a response to outside allergens, like dust, pollen, or certain foods.

Allergies (Type I Hypersensitivity) are actually a malfunction of our immune system so that our body becomes hypersensitized and reacts immunologically to typically non-immunogenic substances. The substances that cause our bodies to become this way are called allergens.

On the other hand, if the allergies hit you in the eyes, redness and itching of the conjunctiva often follows. Other common signs of allergies are wheezing and dyspnoea, bronchoconstriction, and sometimes outright attacks of asthma. You may also experience various rashes, such as eczema, hives, and contact dermatitis.

Systemic allergic responses are more serious compared to local symptoms. Depending on the severity of your response, allergies can cause cutaenous reactions, bronchoconstriction, edema, hypotension, coma, and even death.

Hay fever is actually one example of minor allergies caused by airborne pollen. But aside from environmental factors, allergies may also be triggered by medications.

Why do we get allergies?

Our immune system is a well-trained and disciplined bio-weapon that protects our bodies from harmful substances. Its mechanics is so amazing that it can identify and destroy many foreign invaders. However, as amazing as our immune system is, it makes mistakes sometimes. And so we have allergies, which, as we mentioned, results from a hypersensitive immune system.

The hypersensitized immune system misidentifies an otherwise innocuous substance as harmful, and then attacks the substance with a degree of ferocity that is greater than required. As a result, we experience problems that can range from mildly inconvenient to uncomfortable to total failure of major organs of the body.

How does the immune system go into a hypersensitized state?

There are actually several ideas on this. Some schools premise that allergies are almost always triggered by protein. Certain persons have faulty genetic codes so that their lymphocytes or the white blood cells (the stuff that your immune system is made of) are unable to property distinguish between the threatening and the non-threatening proteins.

So, for example, when you ingest protein from shellfish, your lymphocytes think that the substance is trying to invade the body. As a result, they produce large amounts of antibodies which attach themselves to mast cells and basophils throughout the body. This is known as the sensitizing exposure and this is the very reason why you suddenly develop allergies.

Natural Foods That Fight Allergies

Allergic reactions can manifest themselves in many different physical ways, most of them extremely unpleasant. In the case of environmental allergens such as hay fever or pet dander, it is possible to limit allergic reaction severity by focusing on a diet that boosts the body's ability to fight off reaction effects. Many of the materials that are found in medicinal allergy relief are extracted from naturally occurring ingredients in certain foods and drinks, and including these in your diet will help to alleviate your allergic symptoms. It is important to remember that these foods are for fighting environmentally triggered allergies only, and the only way to avoid food allergy symptoms is to avoid the food that cause it.

In an article published in The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Japanese scientists claim to have isolated a compound found in green tea that blocks one of the cell receptors that is key in triggering the allergic response.

Green tea is quickly making a name for itself as a general purpose, natural cure-all. Recent studies have shown that green tea may help to combat environmental allergies as one of its many treatment applications. Because green tea is less processed than any other kind of tea, its natural composition remains unaltered and thus the compounds within it are more concentrated and better able to produce results than those found in different varieties of tea.

The acids found in Omega-3 fatty acids also are beneficial in fighting allergies, as the acid acts as a natural anti-inflammatory by countering the formation of inflammatory chemicals. There are several foods which are very high in Omega-3 fatty acids, including several kinds of seafood and fish; salmon, haddock, herring, trout, mackerel, and sardines are all full of these acids. Other sources of Omega-3 fatty acids are soybeans, flaxseed, walnuts, and canola, and the fatty acids are also available in a more concentrated version through the oils derived from these foods. These oils can easily be included in your daily meals by adding them to the ingredients for your cooking.

Foods that have a high level of Vitamin E are also excellent in combating allergic reactions. Some of these foods include greens, which are also very strong-tasting. Spinach greens, mustard greens, chard and mustard greens are all very high in Vitamin E. The highest Vitamin E food is far and away dried sunflower seeds, which contain almost 91% of the recommended daily intake of the vitamin. Almonds are also high in Vitamin E, as are olives, papaya, and fresh blueberries. Any of these foods are an easy addition to a regular diet.

One last food to consider when thinking about intakes that will limit your allergic reactions are juices. Natural fruit juices are high in antioxidants, which help to fight the inflammatory effects that allergies produce. Make sure when you buy juice, though, that it is indeed natural. Many juices on the market do not contain a lot of natural juice, and it is the natural juice that is essential when it comes to containing antioxidants.

A "Magic Pill" for Hayfever and Other Acute Allergies. Homeopathy is Surprisingly Effective.

Seasonal allergies (a.k.a. "hay fever") are enormously common, affecting at least 35.9 million people in the United States alone. In fact, approximately 16.7 million office visits to U.S. health care providers each year are attributed to allergic rhinitis. Interestingly, homeopaths pioneered both the research on allergies and allergy treatment. In 1871, British homeopath C.H. Blackely suggested that seasonal sneezing and nasal discharge were the result of exposure to pollen. Later, American homeopath James Tyler Kent defined the practical principles of treating allergies with homeopathy. If someone develops an acute reaction to pollen (or another allergen), such as a running nose or itching, watery eyes, during the allergy season, this reaction is addressed first. After all, there is no need for anyone to suffer discomfort. Then, during the symptom-free season, a homeopath aims to find a so-called constitutional remedy that solves the problem on every level of a person's being.

It can take a while for the full affects of a remedy like this to be felt.

But in the end, many other complaints and conditions usually drop away along with the symptoms of allergy. Today conventional allergists use a desensitization process that resembles the homeopathic practice of "using like to cure like." They give their patients a bit of the allergen (for example, tree pollen) to stimulate a reaction that the body overcomes, thus making the body stronger. However, their injections do not feature homeopathically prepared solutions. It's a little known fact that a homeopath, Grant L. Selfridge, M.D., was the first president of the organization that is now called the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. How do you take homeopathic remedies? These specially prepared remedies are sold in health food stores and come in the form of small sweet pills. Buy remedies in concentration 30C. Place 5 pills under the tongue and let them dissolve. Repeat the dose in 15 minutes. If there is no improvement of symptoms at all in about 30 minutes after the second dose stop taking the remedy. Go see a doctor or go to the emergency room. My book Easy Homeopathy describes many highly effective solutions for acute allergies. Here are six that you can start using today.

Allium cepa (made from red onion): Take Allium if you see the following signs. (Always compare these signs with the signs indicating a need for Euphrasia.)

* Irritating, caustic discharge from the nose that irritates the nose and the upper lip (opposite of Euphrasia)

* Bland discharge from the eyes (opposite of Euphrasia)

* Discharge from the nose and eyes in large amounts

* Nose eventually gets completely obstructed

* Frequently there is heaviness in the middle of the forehead and/or a headache that gets better when the nose drains freely

* Frequently the symptoms begin on the left side

* You feel worse: in the late afternoon and evening, and from being in a warm room

* You feel better: from open air, cold air

Apis mellifica (made from honeybee):

More times than not this is the correct remedy to take for allergic reactions to beestings. Be prepared to give it on the way to the emergency room. Use it to relieve any severe allergic reaction that involves the following combination of key symptoms.

* Very significant swelling of the eyes. Sometimes eyes are literally bloodshot from swelling

.* Heat and burning sensation of the face and the eyes

* Craves cold applications and is much improved by them

Arsenicum album (made from oxide of arsenic):

* Irritating watery discharge from the nose

* Dripping from the nose, which is completely obstructed

* Burning (eyes, nose, throat) that is better from hot drinks or hot applications

* Right side is mainly affected

* You feel better: from being in a warm room, warm drinks, and warm applications (compare to Allium cepa)

* You feel worse: from anything cold

Euphrasia officinalis (made from eyebright):

(Always compare to Allium cepa.)

* Eyes feel irritated, burning and itching

* Tears are abundant and irritating, nasal discharge is bland (exactly opposite to Allium cepa)

* Worse: in the morning and from warm wind

* Better: upon lying down in bed at night

Sabadilla (made from cevadilla seed):

* Remarkable fits of sneezing. Some people sound like an automatic weapon

* Every fit of sneezing provokes tears

* Constant itching inside of the nose and/or the palate

* Worse: from cold and open air

* Better: from heat, being in a warm room, and warm drinks

Urtica urens (made from stinging nettle):

This remedy is specifically used for allergic reactions to shellfish and stings by jellyfish. Look for:

* Itching hives with a prickling, burning sensation

* Hives that look like red, raised blotches with white centers

Now you are equipped with powerful weapons.

Information about latex gloves and latex allergies

What is latex:

Latex is a natural substance found in nature that comes from the rubber tree. The milky white fluid is drained from the tree and when this is left to dry it becomes sticky and gooey. Several chemicals are added into the rubber to make the latex used for latex gloves.

Allergic reactions to latex:

Allergic reactions to latex are quite common. Some common reactions to latex are:

Red rashes

Eye and nose irritation

Shortness of breath

Shock and seizures

Latex allergies should be taken seriously and preventative steps should be taken. An allergic reaction can come on suddenly even if you have been tested negative for latex allergies. Latex allergies are caused by proteins in natural rubber and the chemical process used to make latex gloves. For people who have allergies we recommend using a non latex alternative such as nitrile.

Where are latex gloves used:

Latex gloves are used common place in hospitals and medical facilities as a barrier against bacteria and viruses. The more we discover how illnesses are passed from person to person the more precautious our society has become. It is now common place for latex gloves to be used in food preparation, food handling and any service where contact is made from person to person where there is a chance for the transfer on infection and disease. As a precaution against the spread of malicious bacteria and viruses US Postal service employees use gloves while handling our mail. Auto technicians use gloves to prevent oil and grease from being in contact with the skin, this makes for easy cleanup and prevents harmful chemicals from penetrating the skin.

Gesundheit! A look into the world of Living with Allergies

Allergies are nothing to sneeze at. In fact, common household and environmental allergies can cause loss of production, loss of money, and can make you feel just plain crummy. The bottom line when it comes to allergies is that this world is filled with potential allergens and if you are a person who suffers from the effects, running from them won't do you much good. Instead, say "Gesundheit!" and attack the problem head on!

Allergies can be tested by a simple skin test administered by a physician to see what irritants will cause a slight localized reaction. Allergies can manifest as hay fever, watery eyes, itching, hives, swelling, and even if severe enough, asthma. The key here is prevention and control. Here are a few tips to keep the "Gesundheits" to a minimum in your presence so you can carry on in your hectic daily life when dealing with environmental allergies.

Remove old carpet and replace with hard wood floors or new carpet. Carpeting and rugs are prime habitats for dust mites and pet dander which are major contributors to household allergies. By replacing old carpets, you are getting rid of years of dust mites and droppings.

Vacuum twice per week, deep clean twice a year. It has been clinically proven in many studies that vacuuming your carpets and rugs with a good HEPA filter Vacuum such as Miele vacuum cleaners. Meile vacuum cleaners are a good choice for this task because they will reduce your levels of dust mites significantly. It is also a good idea to have your floors steam cleaned once per year to get the deep dirt, dust, and other allergens out.

Do your laundry. Wash your bed linens each week in hot water and cover with Allergen proof slipcovers. Companies are becoming more aware of the health hazards associated with dust mites and dander and are making products to be anti-allergenic to be used as covers for mattresses and pillows.

Keep pets off of furniture. The family pet should be not allowed on furniture. This allows the dander which is basically dust mite food, to really infest mattresses and furniture. Shampoos made for dander control may be another option.

Keep yourself cool. Dust mites love humid, warm, moist conditions. Running a room dehumidifier is a good idea to keep the humidity down and the dust mites at bay. Air cleaners are another good bet for keeping a smoke and pollen free home.

Change your filters. Change your duct work filters monthly and use a Hepa grade filter. Home air purifiers can also help to make sure the air pumped through your home is as clean as it can be.

Living with allergies can be difficult at times but with the use of Miele vacuum cleaners in addition to these simple tips, the only "Gesundheit!" that will be heard is the one you give the person next to you.

Suffering from Baby Food Allergies

Are you concerned because your baby develops rashes, or itching and swelling of the mouth or any other syndrome after having a particular type of food? If it is happening quite frequently, then it is better, that you read this article, because your child is suffering from baby food allergies.

Signs and Symptoms

You know your allergies are starting up again if you experience swelling in parts of your body. This is called local or systemic inflammatory response, caused by the presence of allergens. For instance, if your allergies affect you in the nose, you will experience swelling of the nasal mucosa (allergic rhinitis). During this condition, you will probably find yourself performing the "nasal salute" more than necessary as itching of your nose will induce you to wipe your nose in an upward direction.

It is not easy to identify food allergies. For many babies the first sign is chronic atopic dermatitis or eczema, which are dry, itchy patches of skin appearing on the face, kneecaps, and elbows. Other symptoms can be itching and swelling of the face, mouth, and lips, rashes, watery eyes, vomiting or diarrhea, wheezing or loss of consciousness. If your baby is allergic to any baby food, his immune system will react whenever he ingests it by releasing antibodies to 'fight it off'. This process starts the above-mentioned symptoms. If he is consistently having any of the other above symptoms within two hours of swallowing a certain food, then take your baby to a pediatric allergist for testing.

The allergist after asking you detailed questions about your baby's symptoms, might ask for a skin or blood test to determine whether the symptoms are due to an immune reaction. If the skin test produces a rash or the blood test shows antibodies to the food, then he's allergic. The allergist can tell you which food or foods are causing the problem. Once you come to know about the source of the allergy, it is better to avoid that food since there are no shots or medicines that work for food allergies. Though avoiding a particular food might not be so easy since foods can show up in any place and even a little bit of that may trigger allergy. Therefore you must take care about reading labels of the baby food bottles, knowing which ingredients to avoid, and enquire about ingredients in restaurant dishes. There are some web sites also that can help you identify and steer clear of allergy inducing baby foods. You should always call the manufacturer if you're unsure about a product's ingredients.

If you are a nursing mother and find your baby is allergic to a specific food, you have to give up the food yourself. Because the proteins that cause the allergy will be passed on to the baby through your breast milk.

If your baby has got severe allergic reactions then immediately call for the help of paramedics. Don't try to call the doctor or try to drive him to the emergency room since this might cause more severe problems that may result to his choking. Be always prepared that if once your baby has had a reaction to a food it might happen a second time also. Take the doctor's recommendations for that. The doctor might suggest that you carry a shot of epinephrine, called EpiPen. Since food allergies are usually genetically inherited, it is not possible to prevent them completely. But you may be able to ward them off by not introducing the babies to such foods that can trigger an allergic reaction until his body is developed.

When your baby starts eating solids, you must take proper care while introducing him to new foods. Start to give him the foods in small quantities and watch how his immune system reacts. Through this approach you will be able to identify the problem food and immediately remove it from his diet.

Many children suffering from allergy due to dairy products generally grow out of these allergies by the time they are 2 or 3. At that point you must take your child to the allergist to check whether it is fine to let him have the dairy products. But allergies to peanuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, and eggs generally last a lifetime.

So all you mothers out there, if your baby is suffering or has suffered from baby food allergy, take the proper measures so that it can be cured.
