Skin Allergies And Cleaning

Lots of people think that skin allergies are caused by pollution and dirty environments. This is true but the good news is that there are positive things you can do to reduce allergic reactions and symptoms, such as asthma.

Keep away furry and feathered animals from your bedroom.

Dust mites are too small to be seen with the naked eye. You can find all sorts of information about dust mites on the Internet. However here we will talk about how to control dust mites effectively and reduce symptoms from them.

- Change bed sheets, pillowcases and blankets at least once a week. To kill dust mites, you have to wash bedding in a washing machine at a temperature of at least 130 F. So we recommend you to choose light coloured bedding so that their colour will not noticeably fade.

- Protect your mattress, box springs and pillows with allergy-proof covers. This keeps dust mites away from the flakes of dead human skin cells which are a primary food source for them.

- Keep stuffed toys away from your bed. You might be amazed to learn that stuffed toys can attract dust mites.

- Reduce humidity. It helps if you can lower the relative humidity in your house, normally lower than 50% is sufficent. When dust mites can't absorb moisture from the air they will shrink and die. You can use air conditioners and dehumidifiers to achieve this benefit.

- Use stone, hardwood or laminate flooring instead of carpet if possible This eliminates an ideal dust mite territory. If you cannot choose your flooring, make sure that you use asteam cleaner on your carpets at least once a year.

- Dust and vacuum your home at least once a week. You need to clean your house regularly. Find a cleaner if you cannot afford the time. Regular dusting and vacuuming will help to control dust and therefore dust mites in your house. Use a damp mop or damp cloths on hard floors and furnishings as dry cloths stir up dust mite remains. Vacuum carpets, sofas, curtains and window blinds regularly with a powerful vacuum cleaner, preferably with a special filter.

- Your pets' dead skin cells are another food source for dust mites. So it's best to have your pets sleep as far away from your bedroom as possible. You can treat your pets' sleeping areas the same as yours, i.e. regular cleaning and use allergy-proof covers.

Every little helps. For more information, use our special cleaning team, if you are based in London or the South East.

Food Allergies in Infants and Babies

Food allergies are a common problem amongst babies alike.

There are many possible reasons for food allergies. Your infant could be allergic to cow's milk or your child could be having some problems dealing with solids when you're trying to wean him/her.

First, try to eliminate the following products from your infant's diet.

· Dairy products

· Soy

· Egg (or at least white of egg)

· Wheat

· Peanuts

· Tree nuts

· Citrus fruits

· All types of food additives (reduce introduction of canned, packaged or ready-to-eat food)

· Shellfish

Food Allergies in Infants and Babies

Is your baby susceptible to bouts of unexplained itchiness that you thought were merely a phase or skin sensitivity? Is her nose sometimes stuffy or runny? Is she cranky for no apparent reason and is she trying to tell you something?

Causes for food allergies:

· Introduction of allergenic solids in baby's diet before four months of age

· Allergy towards cow's milk

· Allergy towards other foods like dairy products, fish, nuts, or wheat

· Heredity

· Enzyme deficiency which causes lactose intolerance

· In rare cases, a serious undetected illness or condition

Is emitting large quantities of intestinal gas a regular affair for your infant? Is his tummy a little more bloated than other kids' and does he struggle to pass even soft stool or diarrhea?

If the answer is '"yes" to most of these questions, read on. Your baby might be dealing with a food allergy.

First of all, don't panic. It's not as serious as it sounds. Food allergies are a common problem amongst babies and adults alike.

There are many possible reasons for food allergies. Your infant could be allergic to cow's milk or your child could be having some problems dealing with solids when you're trying to wean him/her. Here are some possible causes for food allergies:

· Introduction of allergenic solids in baby's diet before four months of age

· Allergy towards cow's milk

· Allergy towards other foods like dairy products, fish, nuts, or wheat

· Heredity

· Enzyme deficiency which causes lactose intolerance

· In rare cases, a serious undetected illness or condition

Although food allergies in most cases are merely a nuisance and not life-threatening, parents still need to know the type of food or food group to eliminate from their baby's diet. By avoiding, rotating the diet and playing food detective, we can minimize the discomfort and symptoms of food allergies as much as possible.

· Shellfish

If you're not sure whether your baby is indeed suffering from a food allergy, observe your baby very closely and monitor his/her diet to see if she is experiencing any of the following allergic reactions:

· Rashes on face or other body parts that are red and scaly

· Hives

· Swollen hands and feet, puffy eyes

· Dark circles under the eyes

· Throat soreness and tongue

· Sneezing, running or stuffy nose

· Wheezing

· Persistent cough

· Ear infection

· Red and scaly rashes around the anus

· Abdominal discomfort

· Diarrhea or soft stool

· Poor weight gain

· Bloating of the stomach

· Gassiness

· Fatigue, headaches

· Irritability, moodiness, hyperactivity

· Sore muscles and joints

If you've determined that your infant is, indeed, suffering from a food allergy, try substituting some of the allergenic foods with non-allergenic foods like apples, apricots, barley, beets, grapes, cranberries, mangoes and oats.

Other non-allergenic foods include asparagus, carrots, cauliflower, chicken, broccoli, lettuce, rice, safflower oil, salmon, sweet potatoes, rye and honey.

Food allergies, as mentioned earlier, are quite common among infants and can be dealt with easily. The most important thing is for us to detect them, minimize reaction and symptoms, get advice from a professional and eliminate the alergies' immediate causes.

Allergies - The Sneezing Sickness

I've suffered from an allergy to dust, sawdust, and fine particles, ever since I graduated from high school. Shortly after I graduated, I moved with my mother into a small cottage. For some reason, shortly after starting to live in that place, I started getting sneezing fits, runny nose, eyes, stuffed up and itchy nose. My condition became so bad that I went to be examined by the local doctor. His diagnosis was that I was allergic to dust, and fine particles. I expected him to prescribe an effective medication to make my symptoms go away but instead, his recommendation was to remove all the dust from the environment where I lived.

So I helped do a lot of vacuuming and general cleaning in the house, to try to get rid of as much dust as possible. It didn't really work well so when I had a bad attack, I used over the counter allergy medication called Dimetapp. It seemed to stop the sneezing fits and the itchy and stuffed up nose but one side effect was, it made me really sleepy.

Part of the problem might have been that my mother had a habit of shaking out the bed linen, before making up my bed. In particular she would shake out, or snap the sheet before arranging it on the mattress. This seemed to shake out what ever lint or loose material that was attached to the sheet and always seemed to make my condition worse.

When I moved to my work location accommodation, my allergies improved, except when I was close to where a chain saw was cutting wood. The sawdust seemed to make me experience many of the same symptoms as the laundry dust had in the house.

I have learned that it is thought that the dust in a room does not really cause the allergy symptoms. There is a point of view that dust mite insects living on the grains of dust are actually responsible for causing the person's discomfort.

The house mites, like all living things eat, and then eliminate their waste. The mite's eliminations contain various protein type substances. When you breathe these in or they come in contact with your skin, your body makes antibodies. Your antibodies release a chemical known as histamine. Histamine produces all my nasty sneezing and stuffed up runny nose symptoms.

Because my mother also had allergies, it is thought that, I also carry the predisposition to the discomfort of allergies as having allergies is thought to be a hereditary condition.

That doesn't really explain why I get all the same symptoms in a place where there is sawdust in the air. Any time I am around fine particles of sawdust my condition flares up. That is one reason why I would not want to work In a saw mill, or plywood plant where there are fine wood particles floating all over in the air as I would always be a sneezing worker.

I find that by staying away from areas contaminated with these fine particles, my condition has almost completely disappeared

SURVIVING HOME REMODELING WITH ALLERGIES

May is National Home Improvement Month and also National Allergy & Asthma Awareness Month. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) "The Voice of the Remodeling Industry™" is providing tips to homeowners on how to prevent a remodeling project from becoming an allergenic nightmare, since it is estimated that 36 million Americans have allergies.

Dust and mites are stirred up in the air, and are the two main causes of allergic reactions during a remodeling project. Aside from allergens, there are also some extremely dangerous materials such as asbestos and lead paint that can be harmful to anyone who comes in contact with it. In such cases, NARI highly recommends having a professional remove potentially harmful materials.

Following these tips from NARI can reduce the chances of an allergic family member with allergies falling victim to allergens during a home remodeling project. Preparations can be made in the home that will cut allergic reactions to a minimum, including:

Ø Inform your remodeling contractor during your first meeting about any allergies.

Ø Seal off the area to be remodeled with plastic sheets; leave plastic sheeting up until cleanup from the job is complete. When sheeting is removed and discarded, avoid carrying it through the home.

Ø Close all vents in the room being remodeled so that dust won't travel though the air ducts.

Ø Open windows in the room being remodeled at least a crack and set up a fan to exhaust air towards the outside.

Ø Keep family pets out of the work area. They can track dust and mites all over the house.

Ø Vacuum and sweep daily to prevent dust from spreading.

Ø Change your furnace filter often since it will pick up more particles than usual.

Ø Plan for removing debris. Using a chute out the window is ideal since it will eliminate the possibility of tracking materials through the house.

If you are having a new floor put in, consider using a hard floor such as wood, ceramic or slate instead of carpeting. Carpeting is an ideal home for dust mites, which is a leading cause of allergies in the home. Before making a decision, talk to your remodeling contractor for recommendations. Be sure if you choose hardwood floors, to discuss the effects of fumes that may be emitted when furnishing a new hard floor. Consider staying out of the home for a couple days to let it properly air out after installing a floor.

NARI is a professional association whose member companies voluntarily subscribe to a strict code of ethics. Consumers can search www.RemodelToday.com to find a remodeler who is a member of NARI.

How to get rid of your allergies using all natural remedies

Have you ever wondered why allergies occurs ?

Allergies are caused when the body over reacts to certain substances like pollen, ragweed, animal dander, certain foods, like nuts, eggs, milk, chocolate. Substances which cause allergies are called allergens.

Wear a dust mask when you are doing the house cleaning. Many of the dusting and vacuuming devices put almost as much dust and pollen back circulating in the air as they take out. A dust mask will help you from getting a "snoot full" of pollen as you are cleaning. Speaking of vacuum cleaners, you should really have a HEPA vacuum or at least one with a HEPA filter after the bag filter. This will reduce the pollen and other bad stuff that you put back into your home air space.

When the body's immune system identifies these foreign invaders, it sends out antibodies to get rid of them.

Usually, the amount of antibodies sent out is proportional to the amount of allergen. Allergies occur when the body over reacts and sends too many antibodies, which attack the allergen and the body's own tissue.

This causes the symptoms of allergies, hay fever, itchy skin, they can be light and very annoying , runny nose itchy eyes, or serious, like asthma .

Sometimes allergies are inherited. They can run in the family. Also, if a mother does not have enough nutrition from fresh foods available to her during pregnancy, or if she is stressed and does not eat healthy food during pregnancy, the baby may be more susceptible to allergies.

Stress has been proven to be a major cause of allergies. This is the reason I believe, that alot of people begin getting allergies in their late 20's and early 30's. Stress weakens a person's immune system, and causes over reaction to allergens.

A long time ago, there was no hay fever but since the advent of junk foods and instant food ( frozen foods), hay fever has become rampant. If your hay fever is not inherited , then it could be from the foods you are eating.

How to cure allergies ?

The best way to get rid of allergies is to find out which allergens are causing your allergy and then avoid them. Of course, this is not always possible.

The medications that are usually recommended have many side effects , sometimes serious, and they don't address the underlying cause of the allergy.

Same thing goes for allergy shots. They may work for one season, but not for the next. Fortunately, there are better natural remedies. They go to the underlying root of the problem, and balance the body so that it does not over react to allergens.

Here are some of the natural remedies which are good for allergies.

Nettles, Marshmallow, Acerola Cherry, Cayenne, Ginger.

* Nettles is a longtime favorite of herbalists. is is rich in vitamins A and C, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and chlorophyll.

* Marshmallow is soothing to all parts of the body it comes in contact with, and contains large amounts of vitamin A, calcium, zinc and also contains some iron, sodium, iodine, and B-complex.

* Acerola Cherry is excellent as an anti-histamine and has one of nature's highest natural content of Vitamin C.

* Cayenne contains quercitin, a natural antihistamine, which helps those with allergies and breathing problems.

* Ginger is a good pain reliever and fights asthma . Also when you can't quit coughing, good to drink hot ginger tea or hot water with ginger and honey in it because ginger stimulates circulation and helps clear your sinuses and lungs of mucus.

For foods,

Eat a balanced diet of fresh foods, red, green, black, yellow, orange color foods every day. In asia, it is believed that if you eat 30 kinds of foods a day can keep you healthy.

Here are the foods recommended for your allergies and health,

Leeks, green onions, Daikon, dark green leaves, Raddish, beans, seaweeds, potatoes, sweet potatos.

* Potatos have alot of Vitamin C and calcium .
* Leeks and green onions soup is excellent for allergies and cold and flu.
* Daikon (asian raddish) is a kind of Asian raddish that is really good for itchy skin
* Sweet potatoes are great to avoid colds.
* Beans have alot of Vitamin E .

The easiest way to get a lot of nutrition is eat vegetable soup with many vegetables in it every day.

Foods and drinks to avoid

Junk foods , instant foods ( frozen foods ) , soda, alcohol

The remedies above are good for allergies and keep your body healthy and it will usually take a while to get the effect. For immediate relief , you can find much faster natural remedies at http://www.thenaturalremedies.com

Cleaning Up For Hay Fever Allergies

Spring is coming and with it the pollen that is the primary cause of Hay Fever. Start getting ready today and you can reduce the watery eyes, runny nose, and low energy associated with Hay Fever allergies.

How do we reduce the symptoms of Hay Fever? Simply put, we reduce exposure to pollen. Let's look at a typical American home and understand how to achieve this reduction of pollen exposure.

First we need to make sure that we have air conditioning. While we all enjoy the breeze from an open window, that breeze will carry in the pollen that we want to keep out. Therefore we need air conditioning to keep the inside of our home pleasant. Since some pollen will get inside when door are opened and closed we need to make sure that the filter on is in good shape. Usually the air conditioning system uses the same filter as the furnace. Change to a high-end furnace filter available from 3M, WEB, and Purolator. These are much more effective than your bargain basement home improvement center filters. Next, change the filter monthly during the peak Hay Fever season. It is a small price to pay for a bit of cleaner air.

This next recommendation is simple and inexpensive. When you and your children come home after work or after play take a shower and put on freshly laundered clothes. Your hair, skin, and clothes are ideal places to harbor pollen so don't spend the evening in your own personal pollen cloud. Get clean! This extra pollen-free time will help you to recover from the day and helps your body get ready for a restful sleep.

Now that everything is clean and tidy the job should be done. If you still have sneezing at home the next line of defense is a HEPA air purifier. Put a small one in each bedroom and run them on high during the day. This will create a clean air bubble in which your family can sleep restfully. If there is a family room or other common area put an air purifier there so that just before bedtime you get maximum clean air.

If your family still sneezes see your Doctor for medication to address Hay Fever allergies. There are a number of new drugs that will block the T-Cells which cause the runny nose due to pollen.

Ted Zajac Jr. is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Vice President of Technology for ClearFlite Incorporated that can be found at http://www.airpurifiers.com/ . Ted has been published in a variety of magazines from Byte to Hydraulics and Pneumatics.
