Mold Allergies - Learn About The Symptoms

Mold allergies are one of the main health problems that affect people of all ages. There are thousands of molds, although some of them do not cause any allergies at all. In fact there are only about 12 different kinds of molds that can cause a serious allergy. It is possible that mold might be the major reason that people have seasonal allergies. Mold spores are very tiny and they are airborne, which makes it possible for you to have mold anywhere in your home. However, the most common reason for mold allergies is mold growing in areas where there is a lot of moisture.

The Stachybortrys mold grows on areas that get soaked in water and are not completely dried out.

The most common symptoms of mold allergies are watery eyes, wheezing, stuffed up nose, shortness of breath and asthma. A mild mold allergy may not even require you to seek medical attention, whereas other symptoms may be so severe that they require hospitalization. A Stachybotrys allergy has been known to cause bleeding in the lungs of infants, especially when it is combined with exposure to second hand smoke. The Stachybotrys atra mold can cause disorders of the nervous system, such as the inability to concentrate, changes in personality and sleep disorders.

You can control your mold allergies by containing or reducing the amount of mold in your home. Some ways you can do this include keeping the level of humidity below 40%. You can use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier in times when the humidity is really high and in so doing help to keep down the severity of your mold allergy. You do need to ensure that your kitchen and bathroom are ventilated. If you have a HEPA filter, change the filters on a regular basis. If the filters are clogged they are not going to do much to take the mold spores out of the air in your home.

There are some people whose mold allergies flare up when they eat certain foods. These include such foods as cheese, mushrooms, dried fruits, and foods containing yeast. These foods actually contain mold, which will certainly aggravate a mold allergy. There are many different types of products on the market to help you with your mold allergies, but the best thing is to try to eliminate mold from your home.

How A Dyson Vacuum Cleaner Can Help With Dust Mite Allergies

Over 300 years ago Anton van Leeuwenhoek, the inventor of the microscope, discovered the existence of dust mites. These small spider-like creatures are invisible to the naked eye, but they can be found all over your house. The problem with these pesky little critters is that, after pollen, they are the biggest cause of allergic reactions in humans. In this article, we'll look at how using a Dyson vacuum cleaner can help people who suffer from dust mite allergies.

If our skin comes into contact with dust mite droppings, this can trigger an allergic reaction and lead to itchy red bumps on the skin.

Dust mites feed on the dead skin cells that we shed every day as we walk around, so dust mites basically live where we do. Because they also like "warm", humid places, the places we spend the most of our time like beds, sofas and armchairs are their most furtive feeding grounds. As an example, a typical mattress can have anywhere between 100,000 to 10 million dust mites living inside!

If someone breathes in dust containing these droppings, they can experience more serious symptoms such as shortness of breath or even, in extreme cases, an asthma attack. Some experts even believe that exposure to the mites in the first, crucial year of life can trigger a lifelong allergy. So dust mite control can be especially important if you have a newborn baby.

Research has shown that taking people with allergies out of an environment with a high incidence of mites can alleviate their symptoms. Some asthmatics can also benefit hugely from being removed from high-mite environments. So how can a Dyson vacuum cleaner help?

A Dyson can help you effectively control/reduce dust mite levels. Most conventional vacuums are "inefficient". They lose suction because the filters and bags become clogged. This is bad because they often end up just throwing up the dust mites into the air, rather than actually hoovering them up! This can make your allergy worse! But Dyson's patented Cyclone technology has been designed to prevent the loss of suction that traditional vacuum cleaners suffer from, so you can be sure that the Dyson is always delivering maximum power and extracting those pesky dust mites from your home.

Dust mites can also escape from the dust bags used by traditional vacuums. So all of the hard work you put into vacuuming them up could be wasted. Everyone has heard of Dyson's bagless vacuum technology. But apart from saving you money in the long run (which helps to offset and justify the initial cost), it enables you to dispose of the dust mites right after you've hoovered them up.

But isn't this all just a load of marketing hype, I hear you ask? Well, maybe to a certain extent, but the Dyson design is based on sound engineering principles. So much so that Dyson successfully defended their patents when Hoover tried to copy their technology. And the British Allergy Foundation – an independent charity organization - has awarded its coveted Seal of Approval to most of the Dyson range (DC07, DC08, DC11, DC12, DC14 and DC15).

The bottom line is, if you are at all concerned about dust mite allergies, you should definitely look into buying a new Dyson vacuum cleaner.

The Link Between Antibiotics and Allergies

Most of us in the alternative medicine arena know that allergy medicine is a huge business, with an immense array of non-prescription over-the-counter products to address nearly any complaint. Bear in mind, however, that they are not appropriate for all patients. In addition to their side-effects such as sedation or nerve reaction, allergy and sinus medications could be incompatible with certain prescription treatments and the chronic health conditions they treat, including high blood pressure, asthma, glaucoma, prostate problems, anxiety, and attention deficit disorder. Even in the best case scenario, allergy medicines could generate detrimental side effects that limit their use on a regular basis.

A recent study from the University of Michigan Medical School might have unearthed a clue.

Now it turns out that the rise of another phenomenon—the use of antibiotics—may hold the answer. The University researchers found that antibiotics seem to prime the immune system to over-react to substances it could just as well ignore.

When the research team gave laboratory mice a five-day course of antibiotics, the animals showed the same effect seen in humans; an upset in the balance of yeast and other microbes in the gut. They then exposed the mice to several common allergens. The mice given antibiotics were hypersensitive to them, while the other mice had a normal immune response.

In the past, we have always thought of allergies and asthma as involving mainly the respiratory system. This research, however, suggests the microbes in the gut play a significant role. The results support a theory that our modern society is too sanitary. According to the results that support the “hygiene hypothesis”, when you are not exposed to very many bugs, your immune system has a hard time differentiating between a harmless substance (such as pollen) and a dangerous toxin, so it is likely to overreact.

A growing number of holistically minded people are seeking natural alternatives to the traditional drugstore offerings. With their temperate actions and minimal side effects, botanical and alternative remedies are a good option for many a sufferer. In contrast to a trip to a big chain drugstore, the preparation of natural remedies is more similar to a craft than a chore, calling to us to slow our tempo, reflecting on the beauty and usefulness of nature’s wealth.

Allergies: Indentifying Your Triggers

Your home is a busy place. People are constantly working, cooking, playing, cleaning, washing and moving things around. That kind of activity is completely normal, but it can generate small particles and chemicals that accumulate in the air you breathe. Whether your home is large or small, old or new, the interior air could be causing breathing problems, in particular for people with allergies and asthma.

There are simple things that you can put in place to clean up the air inside your home, so that everyone can breathe easier. If you have allergies or asthma, you are sensitive to particular “triggers”. These “triggers” can ignite a reaction in your lungs and other parts of your body. Triggers may be found indoors and outdoors. They may be simple things like:

It is important to identify your triggers. This isn’t always easy, so you should experiment by staying away from one suspected trigger at a time. You can tell if it is a problem if you see improvement when it is removed. It is much more difficult to control your triggers outdoors. So, if the air pollution and pollen levels are high, it is an excellent idea to stay indoors. The air in your home is easier for you to control. In some cases, people with asthma and allergies become aware that their symptoms deteriorate at night. Controlling triggers in the bedroom is the best place to start.

There are air cleaning machines that you may purchase that can eradicate some of the triggers in your home. Unfortunately, they will not remove them all. Some air cleaners utilize an electrical charge that makes ozone, which many manufacturers claim will “purify” the air. Sadly, ozone irritates the lungs, and is a particular problem for people with asthma. The American Lung Association does not recommend the use of air cleaners that produce ozone, and is printed in their brochure, “Facts about home control of allergies and asthma.” They advise that you look for a mechanical air cleaner with a HEPA, or preferably a hyper-HEPA filter, that does not produce ozone and can efficiently trap large and small particles.

When It Comes To Allergies, Have We Got It All Wrong?

For the past few years, parents have struggled to keep their young children away from potential allergens. Mainstream thought said that the younger you expose a child to things like peanuts, the greater their risk of developing dangerous allergies. With all of the buzz on peanut allergies causing death, more and more parents have been terrified to let their child play in the same room where a peanut butter sandwich has been prepared!

Now, new studies are finding it is very possible that the precautions parents have been taking to avoid allergies might be the very reason that allergies in children are on the rise in the U.S. The most recent theory is that early exposure to things that cause allergies might help children’s developing immune systems to understand the difference between something that is truly bad for you like germs and something that shouldn’t be a danger, such as pet hair. This is similar to the principles used in immunization.

"What we've learned is that it may, in fact, be important to be exposed early on to a sufficient quantity of allergy-causing substances to train the immune system that they are not a threat," says Andy Saxon of the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA). "And, in people who already have allergies, we see for the first time where the problems lie, and we have new opportunities to tweak the system."

Tests are now being done to determine whether or not exposing infants to peanuts can lower the risk of peanut allergies later. This is an important study, because every year in the U.S. 15,000 people suffer from a severe allergy attack brought on by exposure to peanuts - and 100 of those people actually die. While the testing is in its early stages, scientists don’t recommend giving your baby peanuts at home to test the theory. The tests they are conducting are obviously being done in controlled environments, and as a result none of the children tested are in danger.

Allergies To Pets

In this article we're going to discuss one of the most annoying kinds of allergies that there is, especially for us animal lovers - allergies to pets and what can be done to reduce the allergens produced by pets.

The sad fact is that 10 to 15% of all the people in the world suffer from some kind of allergy to animals, which can make owning a pet not only annoying but potentially dangerous if the allergy is severe enough. Cat allergies are actually twice as common as dog allergies. The body's reaction to the animals is caused by a certain protein found in the animal's saliva, urine or dander. People aren't really allergic to the pet's fur but to the allergen that sticks to the fur, the carpeting or the furniture; basically anywhere your pet has been. Also, these microscopic flakes of dander travel through the air. As a matter of fact, studies show that these allergens can stay in the air even 3 years after an animal has actually been in the home.

Many people ask if there are any breeds of animals that people are not allergic to. The answer is, since all animals have dead skin there are no non allergic breeds. People may be more tolerant of certain breeds of dogs than others but there is no such thing as 100% non allergic. All animals produce some amount of allergen, even if it is a small amount. The allergic symptoms themselves build over time after handling or being near an animal, with the peak time being around 12 hours after. Also, as the pet spends more time living in the person's home the allergens begin to accumulate and a person who showed no symptoms when handling the pet at the store when buying it will start to show symptoms after it has been home for a while, usually within a day.

So what's the answer for people who want to have a pet but are allergic? What can they do in order to have a pet? Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is try to reduce your exposure to the allergens. You're not going to be able to get rid of them completely. One thing you can do to try to prevent the accumulation of allergens is to cover your furniture with plastic mattresses and pillow covers. Replace your carpeting with hard wooden floors and washable throw rugs. Clean the house as often as you can. Make sure you vacuum with a cleaner that has a HEPA filter otherwise allergens are just going to end up getting spread into the air. Your pet should be kept out of your bedroom completely. This may be hard for a real pet lover but it is essential.

When you brush your pet, wear a face mask. Then change your clothes immediately afterward. Unfortunately, the success rate of allergy shots and other treatments for pet allergies is only about 50%. Currently however, a vaccine for people allergic to cats is being tested. This may be a major breakthrough in the future.

Until then, there really isn't much more you can do. If your allergies are severe it is probably best to stick with a fish for a pet.

Allergies - The Peanut Butter Controversy

In this article we're doing to discuss one of the most dangerous allergies, especially to children who really enjoy their peanut butter and jelly and the arguments for giving or not giving peanut butter to young children in potentially high risk allergic groups.

Where is the mold that usually causes the mold allergies?

This is the common cause of mold allergies in homes that have experienced flooding. Other areas in the home where mold is commonly found when you go looking for the source of your mold allergy includes basements, closets, shower stalls in bathrooms, fresh food stored in cupboards and the refrigerator, foam pillows, garbage containers and house plants.

Let's face it, if you're a kid, or even a kid at heart, you love peanut butter and jelly. Who doesn't? Unfortunately, peanut butter doesn't love everybody as many are allergic to it and this is one allergy that can be downright deadly. Recently a girl died just because she had kissed somebody who had eaten peanut butter. That is a very scary thought.

One of the biggest controversies these days is when to actually allow your child to start having peanut butter. Years ago the only warning was not to give your child big chunks of peanut butter but to spread it thin. This could be started at any age. But today, with the alarming number of kids turning out to be allergic to peanut butter, it is recommended that a child not be given peanut butter until 2 or 3 years of age. Even though allergies to peanut butter are not the most common, they are the most deadly and because of this it is believed extra care is needed. Also, these allergies are the least likely to be outgrown.

There are several determining factors in avoiding giving your child peanut butter. The irst factor is if they have shown allergies or intolerances to other foods or even their baby formula. Then there is whether or not they have other allergic type disorders such as eczema, allergic rhinitis, or asthma or if they have members in the family that have these conditions as allergies can be inherited. Also, if they have other family members with food allergies, especially if another family member is allergic to peanut butter.

It is actually recommended that for high risk children they not only avoid peanut butter until they are older but also cow's milk, citrus fruits and juices and wheat until they are at least 1 year old. They should avoid eggs until age 2 and finally peanuts and shellfish until they are over 2 years of age.

This is where the controversy heats up. Some experts say that children who are not considered to be in a high risk group do not have to do these things. Others say that because food allergies, especially peanuts, are so deadly that it just doesn't make sense not to err on the side of caution. They say that even children not in a high risk group can still have allergies to peanuts and therefore the only way to avoid a reaction is to never allow them to eat peanut butter. Some say that's extreme, others say that one reaction can be the last one.

Ultimately, it comes down to the parent. You have to weigh the risks of giving your child peanut butter against the benefits. Yes, peanuts are high in protein and peanut butter and jelly is a very convenient and easy lunch to make, especially for bringing to school. But if your child is severely allergic it only takes one bite of one sandwich.
