Allergies Articles, Tips and Information

Food Allergies

Ever eaten something that made you break into rashes? How about itchiness of the throat, around the eyes, your ears, and even your hands and feet? These are actually symptoms of food allergies.

The release of these chemicals is what triggers your food allergies to act up.

Food allergies are a condition where the body’s immune system becomes hypersensitized. As a result of this hypersensitized state, it mistakenly believes that food entering the body is harmful and creates antibodies to counteract it. So, the next time you eat that food, the immune system releases massive amounts of these antibodies and other chemicals, including histamine, as a protective measure against the “harmful” substance.

The allergic symptoms could affect any part of the body, but mostly the respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, and the cardiovascular system. An estimated 11 million Americans suffer from true food allergies, with symptoms ranging from the mildly inconvenient to uncomfortable to complete collapse of major organs of the body, a condition known as anaphylaxis.

Symptoms and Treatment

If you’ve had allergic reactions before, then you probably are already familiar with the symptoms of food allergies. It could range from a tingling sensation in the mouth, the swelling of the tongue and the throat, difficulty breathing, hives, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, drop in blood pressure, and loss of consciousness to death. Typically, the symptoms appear within minutes or two hours after the person has eaten the food he or she is allergic to.

The best treatment to food allergies is strict avoidance of foods you have allergic reactions to. There are no medications as of yet that would totally cure food allergies. Your doctor would probably prescribe drugs to treat the symptoms, but as to cure, there is none so far. Epinephrine, also called “adrenaline,” is the medication of choice for controlling a severe reaction.

Most people do outgrow their food allergies. However, peanuts, nuts, fish, and shellfish are considered lifelong allergies. Some research is currently being done in this area and the results look promising.

Still, your best chance of overcoming food allergies is to avoid foods that you are allergic to. It might help if you read ingredient labels for all foods. If the food has no label, you should avoid eating it all together. And if the label contains unfamiliar terms, ask the manufacturer for a definition or avoid eating that food.

Avoidance Method

Having food allergies doesn’t mean that you ought to stop eating foods that you are otherwise not allergic to. Just because you think you’re allergic to something doesn’t mean that you really are allergic. Taking food out of your diet could result in unbalanced diet, which could lead to other health problems. In addition, you may reach a point where you become frustrated because you think that everything you eat causes food allergies.

By avoidance, we don’t mean complete avoidance of foods. Try to keep a food diary where you make a list of all the foods that you’ve eaten for the day and whether or not you suffered any allergies as a result. The information you garner from your list could help you determine exactly what foods trigger what, and could also give your doctor important information about your food allergies.

Allergy Relief Product

Allergy relief products are a multimillion dollar industry. A cornucopia of products is on display, giving allergy sufferers plenty to choose from. But how are you to know which allergy relief product works? And which one is just a marketing scheme? Check below for some tips and advice on what to look for the next time you’re in the market for allergy relief products.

Air Filters

Good for filtering any airborne allergens, air filters, however, do not include dust mite allergens. That’s because dust mites do not become airborne unless they have been disturbed by cleaning and vacuuming. Experts recommend a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) Filter, which is available as standalone units or bundled with other allergy relief products. The filter can be placed anywhere, but they are most commonly used in the bedroom and as attachment to the air conditioner or furnace.

Dust Mite Control

Majority of dust mite control allergy relief products are in the form of powders and sprays. However, if you want a product that really works, check if it contains tannic acids. According to Dr. Richard Weber, a senior staff physician at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver, tannic acids break down animal dander, cockroach allergens, and dust mite allergens found in carpets and furniture.

Cats Pajamas

However, if you have two cats in the home, sprays may not work effectively. Tannic acids also may produce stain so they are not recommended for light carpets or fabrics. In the case of mites, allergy relief products that contain benzyl benzoate may offer some help.

Hypoallergenic Bedding

“Don’t let the bed bugs bite.” You probably heard that line before, but did you know that these bed bugs do more than bite you? They are allergens, much like dust mites are. One way to prevent an allergic reaction because of bug-infested bedding is to use mattresses and pillows that are encased with specially designed covers that prevent mite allergen from escaping.

Face Masks

This is a very practical solution to avoiding airborne allergens. While cleaning indoors or outdoors, dust found in the surface of your furniture or floor or the ground becomes airborne. To protect yourself from these allergens, wear face masks or other similar allergy relief products.

Vacuum Cleaners

While vacuuming often is important to keep your house dust-free, the vacuum cleaner can be the worst offender for stirring up allergens. Use specially designed bags for the vacuum cleaner.

Allergy Test Kits

Another good allergy relief product to keep around is allergy test kits. Your house can be a very conducive place for allergens to accumulate. To find out how severe the allergens in your home are and protect yourself against these, use allergy test kits.

Allergy Sinus

One of the side effects of allergies deals with your sinuses.  Your head will begin to feel pressure and your nose will become stuffy.  You may find it hard to breath through your nose and your nose may become runny.  Because of the stuffiness of your nose, you will find that your throat will begin to hurt.

Dehumidifiers

For those who live in humid areas, dehumidifiers are a good investment. These allergy relief products especially work to help people who are dust mite and mold allergic as both of these allergens thrive in humid areas. By reducing the humidity in the home with the use of a dehumidifier, the allergen content gets reduced as well.

This is because you are using your mouth to breath with and that dries your mouth and throat.  The drying causes pain to the throat. They are many over-the-counter drugs that you may purchase at a super-market or pharmacy.  Most allergy medicine is made to help your sinus problems.  They will clear up your stuffiness and relieve some of the pressure that you feel at the bridge of your nose.  If you have extreme allergies, it may be best for you to see a doctor and give a prescribed medicine.

This may make you feel better and faster than an over-the-counter medicine.  Sinus troubles can lead to serious problems.  Not only will you feel like you have hay fever, but they can become infected.  A sinus infection may be the miserable for you.  You will become terribly ill and you will develop a high fever.  If you believe that you have a sinus infection, then you need to see your family doctor or physician.

They will help you by giving you some antibiotics and other medicine to clear it up.  You will know if you have a sinus infection because it will be something that you've never experienced.  You will feel like you have a really bad flu, but it could be in the middle of summer.  This odd behavior will definitely be noticed.  Remember if a cold lasts longer than three days, you should go see a doctor to make sure that you don't have any complications.

A sinus infection will only get worse if it goes un-treated.  You will dvelop a serious depression condition and you will begin to feel worse and worse everyday.  That is why it is important for you to seek medical help when you first notice your cold.  It may be able to be cured before you feel any worse.

Dog Allergy

Are you allergic to dogs? If you are but an avid dog lover, then no problem! While there is no such thing as a hypo-allergenic dog breed – one that won’t cause any dog allergy or allergic reactions – there are breeds that produce very little of the allergens that trigger the symptoms.

What are allergens?

Allergens are substances found everywhere around us that our body cannot tolerate. Usually what happens is that you may have been exposed to these allergens before and your immune system had a reaction, producing antibodies to “fight” off these “harmful” substances.

Most of the time, these substances are not harmful at all, only your immune system misidentify them as “foreign” and “potentially dangerous.” So the next time you encounter these allergens, your immune system overreacts by mass producing antibodies to counter these substances. And when that happens, you then experience the symptoms of allergy, such as swelling, bloating, itching, congestion, sneezing, watering eyes, fatigue, skin rashes, headaches, shortness of breath, coughing, respiratory problems, wheezing, asthma, and even fatal anaphylaxis.

What is an allergy?

An allergy is any object that you inhibit you from breathing correctly or using your senses.  Asthma is a little different.  Asthma can be caused by overheating or over exhausting ones self.  It can also be triggered by an allergy.  This will cause your chest to feel congested and tight.

Common allergens causing dog allergy are dander (or shed skin cells), saliva, and urine. You notice that fur is not included. That’s because fur are not allergens by themselves, but they do collect dander and saliva when your pet is grooming.

Within five to thirty minutes of contact with these allergens, the symptoms of dog allergy can occur. But there are instances where the symptoms can occur much later in a sort of delayed reaction.

Hypo-Allergenic Dog Breeds?

The term “hypo-allergenic” is typically used with skincare products that tend to be less irritating to sensitive skin. The hypo-allergenic dog idea came up when people found that there are certain dog breeds that produce less dander than other breeds. As a result, these breeds came to be known as “hypo-allergenic,” “low allergy,” and even “allergy friendly.” People with dog allergy can supposedly tolerate these dogs, but always with proper environmental controls.

Read below for some tips on how to properly control your environment with dogs around:

There are more ways for you to control your dog allergy. But always, the best method is the avoidance method. Yes, we all love our dogs, but try not to spend more time with them. Remember, we all must care for ourselves, too.

Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month

May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.  It is the perfect month to have the awareness because of all the wet days in April.  April showers doesn't just give may flowers, but also spreads spores in the air that effects people with allergies.  Usually, as part of Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month, some areas are giving people free screenings for the both.

The National Asthma and Allergy Awareness program was first recognized way back in 1984.  Ronald Reagan signed a bill to recognize the awareness. This is usually when school children are educated on fitness and health.  Part of the program allows younger children to understand asthma and the seriousness of asthma. Children get the chance to understand both allergies and asthma, as well as, learn how famous people have dealt with their childhood asthma.

Many children can grow out of their asthma by installing activity to their daily lives.  By adding the activities, kids are allowing their lungs to become stronger: this one of the reasons why many schools have a walk-a-thon in May.

Your breathing will become shallow and wheezy. They are many kinds of allergies that can affect your asthma and make you have an attack.  People with asthma should be extra careful, because any allergy can cause an attack.  The most difficult part of a child's attack, is trying to keep them calm.  It is human nature to become panicky when our breathing or existence is being threatened.

Becoming panicky is the worst thing for any parent of an asthmatic child. You don't want to upset them, everyone needs to remain calm and administer the child an inhaler or other type of medicine.  You should ask your doctor for tips or suggests on what to do if your child starts having an allergy or asthma attack.
