Allergies Articles, Tips and Information

Allergies – Dogs May Suffer Too

Many people don’t realize that their dogs, just like human beings, can suffer from allergies. In fact, about twenty percent of the dogs in the United States alone suffer from one allergy or another, with flea allergy dermatitis being the most common form of allergies in dogs. Other types include atopic dermatitis, food allergies, and inhalant allergies.

Over-the-counter preparations and treatments for common dog allergies exist and may be purchased at any good pet supply store, but care should be taken when choosing such treatments.

Signs and symptoms of dog allergies may vary but are often marked by persistent itching and discoloration of the skin (most common in skin allergies), coughing, sneezing, wheezing, and mucus discharge (most common in inhalant allergies), and nausea, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea (common to food allergies and other ailments.)

If you do think your dog has some type of allergy, consult your vet. The doctor will be able to perform tests to determine whether an allergic condition exists, how severe it is, and what the proper treatment will be. If the dog has an allergy to certain foods, it will be imperative to restrict the animal’s diet to eliminate those items that cause a reaction. The vet’s testing methods can help to determine whether this type of allergy exists as well. If the dog has flea allergy dermatitis (an allergic reaction to the saliva of fleas, rather than to the insects themselves), an extreme flea prevention regimen will be recommended.

Just like humans, dogs that suffer from various allergies can live comfortably with them if they are detected and treated properly. It is important to keep in mind that this is not a time to “play doctor” by attempting to diagnose and treat a possible allergic condition yourself. Only your veterinarian is qualified to determine whether your dog is suffering from allergies and what course of action to take.

What One Should Know About Allergies

Allergies affect approximately 60 million Americans, which means one in every five adults or children suffer from them, and are common in men as well as in women. Thirty-five million people have upper respiratory symptoms, which are allergic reactions to airborne pollen. Around 10 million Americans have allergies to cats and two million present severe reactions to various insect stings.

Unfortunately, food allergies are blamed for close to 200 deaths every year. Scientists say that allergies have to do with genetics.

Food allergies are less common in the family of allergies. About one out of three people pretend to have a food allergy and only about three to eight percent of children younger than three years old, and only one percent of adults really have an allergic reactions to food. If one parent has allergies, there are 33% chances that each child will suffer from a form of allergy. If both parents are allergic, it is very much possible (seven cases out of 10) that their children will be allergic, too. If we are to discuss about allergies, we should have in view the fact that allergies usually stay with adults, while children sometimes outgrow them.

An allergy is in fact the response of your body to something that it perceives as a threat. Your body fights the allergen in the same way it would fight a virus or a bacterial infection. We can take as an example the pollens of some plants that are small and light and can be taken away by the winds for miles. Ragweed pollen has been found 400 miles out at sea and two miles up in the atmosphere.

Do I Have to Part With My Pet If I Have Pet Allergies?

Aaaaaaachoo!

Sneezing? Wheezing? Nose runny, eyes itchy? You may be suffering from the common cold. But if the condition has been hanging on for two weeks, or more, you may be suffering from an allergy as opposed to a cold. Your doctor may be the only one who can conclude if you are experiencing an allergic reaction. There are many types of allergies but being allergic to animals is quite common. What happens if you discover you are susceptible to pet allergies?

Some people that have allergies can continue to live with their pet.

Does this mean that your faithful dog, loving cat or beautiful rabbit has to go?

It depends upon the severity of your allergies and whether or not you are prepared to make some changes and live within a few rules. If your allergic reaction to your pet is on the moderate side, you may be able to reduce your suffering by reducing the amount of animal allergens you come in contact with.

Up to 15% of the population are allergic to domestic animals and approximately one third of those continue to live with their pet. For many the pleasure of owning a pet outweighs the burden and discomfort of pet allergies. If your allergies make life miserable for you, but are non life threatening, you may be able to reduce the symptoms by taking the following actions.

If you suffer from allergies, and share your living space with an animal, it is extremely important to keep dust and dust mites to a minimum in your home. The microscopic skin particles that are cast off by dogs, cats, hamsters and other pets are known as dander, and can quickly spread throughout your home and cause allergic reactions for anyone who has a pet allergy.

Never sleep with your pet. You would be breathing in dander for the whole time that you are asleep. Best make your bedroom a no go area for your pets, keep your bedroom door closed and don't allow your pet in. Although you cannot completely prevent dander from getting into your bedroom, keeping the animal out will greatly reduce the level of pet allergen in that room. Buy a low cost vinyl encasing for your mattress, this will keep down the dander that resides within your bed. Wash blankets, sheets and pillow cases frequently.

Where you can replace your carpets. A non porous flooring such as hardwood, tile, vinyl or linoleum will contain far less allergen than carpeting. Where you do have carpets have them cleaned regularly and vacuum frequently - and use a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) vacuum filter. Consider replacing fabric furniture covered for leather or vinyl furniture and replacing your curtains with plastic blinds, an expense but doing so will help reduce the effect of your pet allergies.

Bath your pet frequently, at least once a week and you will greatly diminish the amount of dander residing in your pet's fur (by up to 80%). Contrary to popular belief cats can be bathed, get someone to help and ask your veterinarian for advice on how to do this properly. Damp wipe all surfaces once per week, pet allergens are airborne and will stick to most anything. Don't forget to wipe down your pet's toys they will be harboring allergens.

Washing off or changing the filter in your heating cooling system will help. Consider purchasing a HEPA air cleaner, they can reduce allergens in the home and increase comfort for those who suffer with pet allergies. Talk to your doctor about your commitment to keeping your pet. If he/she considers that your pet allergy is not life threatening he/she may understand your reluctance to part with your animal companion. Allergy shots (immunotherapy) may be prescribed and may help you, together with the steps above, to continue to enjoy the company of your cat, dog, hamster or rabbit.

Fight Allergies with Vitamin E

Supplementing with vitamin E may help relieve some of the symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis (hayfever), reports a study in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (2004;92:654–8). While previous studies have demonstrated other beneficial properties of vitamin E, this is the first to show its effect on allergic rhinitis.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory condition of the nose, throat, sinuses, and eyes. It is caused by an abnormal response by the body to allergens commonly found in the environment such as molds, and pollen from trees, weeds, and grasses. People with allergic rhinitis may have eye and nose itchiness, nasal stuffiness, episodes of sneezing, and a runny nose. The condition is frequently associated with other allergic disorders and is usually inherited; people with allergic rhinitis often have relatives who also suffer from seasonal allergies, asthma, and eczema. Ear infections and chronic sinusitis may result from long-standing allergic rhinitis, as the passages to the ears and the sinuses become blocked.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant, meaning that it has the ability to render harmful substances, called free radicals, less damaging to the body. Preliminary studies have shown that vitamin E can calm portions of the immune system that are involved in allergic reactions. The new study investigated the effect of vitamin E on the symptoms of allergic rhinitis in 112 men and women. The participants were assigned to receive either 800 IU of vitamin E per day, or placebo for ten weeks, in addition to continuing on their current anti-allergy medications as needed to control symptoms. The amount of medication used to alleviate symptoms and the occurrence of nasal symptoms (sneezing, itching, stuffiness, and runny nose) and eye symptoms (watering, itching, redness, and swelling) were recorded.

Nasal symptoms were significantly less in the group receiving vitamin E than in the placebo group. In particular, the vitamin E group experienced much less nasal stuffiness than the placebo group. Eye symptoms were not changed by treatment with vitamin E, and the use of antiallergy medications did not differ between the two groups.

The amount of vitamin E used in this study is within the safe daily intake range; much larger amounts have been used to treat other conditions. Vitamin E appears to be a useful adjunct to medical treatment for allergic rhinitis.

Air Duct Filters And Fighting Allergies

Allergies are an unpleasant fact of life for many today. The symtoms are all too common including, sneezing, coughing, runny nose, breathing difficulties, skin inflammations, and more. A true allergy sufferer knows how difficult it is to deal with these symptoms on a daily basis.

Consultation with a vet is the best first course of action for several reasons. First of all, what you think is an allergic reaction may actually be signs of a more serious ailment and a vet should be the one to determine whether that is the case. Secondly, if the allergy is severe enough, over-the-counter treatments may not be sufficient to treat the symptoms and a prescription strength treatment may be required. There is also the chance that the dog does not have an allergy at all. The last thing you want to do is medicate your pet unnecessarily.

If your allergy is to airborne elements, you are really at the mercy of changing winds, weather, and seasons too when you are outdoors. There isn't much that can be done to control the outside environment, but there is plenty that you can do to try to control the allergens in the air when you are indoors.

There are several tools at the allergy sufferer's disposal to help, but some of the most effective are air purifiers that can help scrub the air of allergic compounds and remove the allergy causing contaminants.

Air duct filters are another valuable weapon in the arsenal for cleaning the air you breathe. Either used by themselves or in tandem with other air cleaners such as air purifiers, they can help rid the air of the following:

Dust, pollen, allergens

Pet dander, dust mites

Harmful bacteria, viruses

Pet odor removal: dog, cat, etc.

Mold / mildew removal

Cigar / cigarette smoke

Air duct filters are very easy to install and yet very effective in what they do. They are designed for use in any HVAC venitilating system to provide central air purification for your home, business or commercial building. They are perfect for small and large ventilating systems in homes or businesses, and industrial use in ventilating systems including; industrial odor removal, gaseous fume removal and biological decontamination.

Best Home Air Purifier

As with other air purification products, air duct cleaners are usually specified to clean the air within a certain area or space. Their results are best achieved when used within the specifications set for each filter.

Air duct filters are another way that allergy sufferers can begin to take back their life and break free from from allergy symptoms.
