Most people want to claim to have a condition or disease because it seems comforting to know what we are afflicted with, but is that worth not taking the tests and missing the opportunity to treat your condition right? The simple fact that you may have a condition that is recognizable by rather easy tests and that the condition is treatable is a blessing in and of itself. Do not be the one that is taking for granted the chance to get rid of an uncomfortable leach in the physical world. Here is a summary of the basic diagnosing procedures, biopsy and endoscopy.
There is only one way to determine the changes in the cells lining the esophagus that leads to Barrett’s esophagus, taking a biopsy. Biopsies are received through the endoscope and are generally of no use in the procedures that diagnose acid reflux, but they can help in identifying cancerous cells like those in Barrett’s esophagus. To understand what is received in the process using the endoscope it is important to understand the diagnosis of acid reflux using endoscopy.
Most notable is the inflammation of the lining of the esophagus or the signs of ulcers and erosions in the throat that are the result of irritation. The endoscopy can indeed reveal most of the major problems that can be endured by the individual suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease. If you think that this procedure is something that you should have performed on you then contact your personal medical professional and set up a time right now.
As always, before you attempt to self medicate or try a new health regimen or program we suggest you retain the services of a qualified health care professional.
More Complications of GERD
Gastroesophageal reflux disease is not generally a socially acceptable subject because it is difficult to understand the pain a person is going through when you are hearing about disgusting things like vomiting and heartburn. However, understanding the complications of GERD is something that every person that has ever had the condition should do, here are a few of the complications of acid reflux, or GERD.
The coughing can cause the breathing tubes to get smaller or narrower and not allow the proper amount of air through the body.
Cough and Asthma- With the many nerves in the lower esophagus it is possible that you could suffer from the nerves that cause coughing being stimulated. When these are stimulated then the refluxed liquid may never even reach the esophagus but still cause problems. Most doctors don’t believe that acid reflux causes asthma, but that it does tend to irritate the condition of asthma by making the individual cough a ridiculous amount, therefore letting less air out. These coughing or asthmatic reactions are not common in all individuals with acid reflux, but it does happen to aggravate the condition.
Sinus and Middle Ear Fluid- Since the throat is very important in its relation to the nasal passages and lymph tissue in small children. The acid reflux can irritate the adenoids and Eustachian tube to the point that the sinuses and ears are seriously damaged. A lot of children have problems with fluid being in their sinuses and ears anyway and acid reflux does not help to rectify the situation. In almost every situation the adults afflicted with acid reflux do not have problems with the sinuses or middle ear because of the lack of adenoids or Eustachian tubes involved in the situation.
These are two of the seven major complications of GERD, continue on with your reading to determine what the complication of your GERD could be.
Here is a summary of the basic diagnosing procedures, X-Rays and examinations of the throat and larynx.
An esophagram, or an X-Ray of the esophagus, required the patient to swallow barium that would provide a contrasting color to show a difference in the lining of the esophagus. This did sound like a foolproof test on the surface, but what about the large percentage of people that suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease and do not have damage to the lining of the esophagus? Are they to be brushed aside in the scheme of things? No, X-Rays are almost obsolete in the diagnosing of acid reflux for this reason, though some doctors still use it in the endoscopy phase.
Another procedure to identify the existence of acid reflux is the process used by the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctors to examine the throat or larynx. These doctors are specially trained to look at and fully examine these areas in their everyday jobs and diagnosing acid reflux is no different. By using acid-depressing medications the ENT specialist will try to confirm the existence of acid reflux or prove its absence in the patient. This diagnosis is reasonably difficult and ineffective due to the same problems with the basic diagnosis of acid reflux, being that some people will respond differently to one treatment than the other.
If you think that these procedures are something that you should have performed on you then contact your personal medical professional and set up a time right now.
Acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, can be caused by a few different things, one being esophageal contractions. Many simply think that the cause is fatty foods or foods that are high in cholesterol, but there are actually life altering events that can cause acid reflux. Some patients may actually produce an abnormal amount of acid that causes acid reflux and others may have several different causes at work, but chances are it is one of four causes; this is what you need to know about esophageal contractions.
The most important process in avoiding acid reflux is swallowing, which may seem like a relatively easy task to perform at first. However, not everyone does this the same and it is what helps the food that you eat be pushed through the esophagus and finally end up in its rightful place in the stomach. Swallowing causes a contraction called peristalsis that begins in the upper esophagus and ends in the lower esophagus with a ring like wave pushing the food through the proper way.
With individuals that suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease this process is defective and the acid that is refluxed is not pushed through the stomach in the proper way. The pressure that is made by the swallow of the person suffering from this condition is not enough to complete the process or the swallows don’t have enough strength to even reach the stomach. This defective disorder is commonly found in people that suffer, not just from acid reflux, but from severe acid reflux disorders.
As usual with acid reflux, the condition worsens at night when the individual does not have the support of gravity in the swallowing process. Though the swallows may be weak with esophageal contractions in the beginning, they are even weaker without the aid of gravity to push the acid into the stomach. Esophageal contractions do not occur in all individuals who suffer from acid reflux, but it does occur in those with the most severe cases, meaning that if you suffer greatly you probably have weak esophageal contractions.
This process, generally called an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, allows the medical professional to get a good look at the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum to get a good feeling for what is happening to the patient’s body. Even though most individuals that suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease do not show any problems, some will show distinct signs of suffering.
Ulcers- A break in the lining of the esophagus that results in inflammation or irritation is generally referred to as an ulcer. This ulcer will damage the cells lining the esophagus and could cause bleeding so severe that a transfusion or surgical procedure is required to fix the problem. Not everybody that has GERD will have an ulcer or the complications of an ulcer, but it is something to think about checking with a doctor if the pain continues to get worse over time.
Strictures- The problem of ulcers isn’t over when the ulcers heal and begin to scar over because these scars, or fibrosis, will shrink scar tissue and cause a scarred narrowing or a stricture. When these strictures continue to narrow the esophagus it makes the food more and more difficult to pass through in the digestive process and makes acid reflux more of a distinct possibility. To fix this problem an endoscopic procedure will be necessary to stretch out the passage enough to allow food through.
Barrett’s Esophagus- One form of GERD that can be extremely dangerous and potentially fatal due to is possibility of causing cancer is Barrett’s esophagus. With Barrett’s esophagus the cells that line the throat can be damaged and even cancerous. An endoscopy or, microscopic examination of the living cells can determine if the cells in the esophagus are cancerous, allowing the inflicted to have a chance to wart off any disease in the offing. This condition only happens in about 10% of patients with GERD, meaning that the chances are you won’t get it, but it never hurts to get checked.
These are three of the seven major complications of GERD, continue on with your reading to determine what the complication of your GERD could be.
